1. Compound sentence
-
Has two or more independent clauses (complete sentences) joined together.
-
They are usually connected by words like and, but, or, so, yet.
-
Both parts can stand alone as sentences.
👉 Example:
-
I wanted to go for a walk, but it started to rain.
(Both parts could be their own sentences: I wanted to go for a walk. / It started to rain.)
2. Complex sentence
-
Has one independent clause (a complete sentence) and one or more dependent clauses (clauses that cannot stand alone).
-
They are usually connected by words like because, although, when, if, since, while, after, before.
-
The dependent clause depends on the main one to make sense.
👉 Example:
-
I stayed home because it started to rain.
(I stayed home = independent clause, makes sense alone.
Because it started to rain = dependent clause, not a full sentence.)
